FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The 2009 Bicycle Leadership Conference to be Held during
Sea Otter Classic Through 2011
The Bicycle Product Suppliers Association announces new dates, location and
conference director for the 12th annual BLC event
MONTGOMERYVILLE, Pa. - July 29, 2008 - In an effort to better leverage networking opportunities and industry leadership attendance, the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association (BPSA) today announced it signed a three-year agreement with the Sea Otter Classic to host its annual Bicycle Leadership Conference (BLC) in conjunction with the cycling festival through 2011.
The 2009 BLC will be held April 15-17, 2009 at the Sea Otter host hotel, the Embassy Suites in Seaside, Calif. The 2009 Sea Otter Classic will be held April 16-19 at the Laguna Seca Recreation Area in Monterey Calif., and is considered the world's largest cycling festival.
"Aligning ourselves with the Sea Otter Classic, a well-attended and highly relevant cycling-focused event, is one way we can further support our attending membership and improve the effectiveness of our conference," said John Nedeau, president of the BPSA and vice president of global sales for SRAM. "Because many of our members also attend the Sea Otter Classic, we are confident that by combining the two events we will boost attendance from manufacturers and suppliers alike."
This year's conference topics will further expand on last year's BPSA Research Project - "Opportunities and Challenges in the Bicycle Industry - Strategic Growth, Retail Execution, and Collaboration"- specifically focusing on opportunities to improve industry awareness, distribution and product portfolios.
Event discussions during BLC 2009 will also focus on improving communication about the growing number of industry organizations and advocacy groups, their individual missions and how manufacturers can better work with these groups to support the broader goals of the industry.
In addition to research results, panel discussions, breakout groups and networking opportunities, the conference will again offer improved bike rides and the industry's most prestigious golf tournament. The BLC will again host the BRAINy awards dinner presentation.
"The Bicycle Leadership Conference is important to the future of our industry," said Frank Yohannan, president and CEO of the Sea Otter Classic. "Only through strong leadership can we identify our challenges and plan a strategy of growth and expansion. All of us at the Sea Otter Classic welcome the opportunity to support this event and further grow the sport of cycling."
While the BPSA will continue to determine the conference topic and content, the Sea Otter Classic has retained the services of Lifeboat Solutions' Lance Camisasca as conference director for the event. Camisasca's experience in the cycling industry as Interbike show director for ten years and his industry contacts will be invaluable in managing the registration, logistics and marketing for the conference.
"The idea for Sea Otter to host the 2009 BLC is brilliant," Camisasca said. "I look forward to helping shape a memorable and purposeful BLC event by integrating the conference components with Sea Otter Classic's activities and events."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Lance Camisasca Receives Individual Advocacy BRAINy Award from Bicycle Retailer and Industry News
Interbike consultant and former show director honored for sustaining and creating new advocacy alliances and increasing Interbike's investment in advocacy fundraising
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. - Feb. 11, 2008 - Lifeboat Solutions founder and Interbike industry consultant, Lance Camisasca, was recently named Individual Advocate of the Year by Bicycle Retailer and Industry News. The award was presented at a dinner and reception held in conjunction with the Bicycle Leadership Conference, January 18-20, 2008.
Now in its eighth year, the BRAINy Individual Advocacy Award recognizes individuals within the cycling industry who have been an effective agent of change and a positive mouthpiece for the industry.
"As a committed cyclist and bike commuter, Lance appreciates the important role bike advocacy groups play in making our streets safer for cyclists," said Megan Tompkins, editor of Bicycle Retailer and Industry News. "Moreover, he understands just how critical advocacy efforts are to the growth of the bike business. In his role as Interbike show director, he has supported numerous national bike advocacy groups over the years, providing them visibility, promotional and fundraising opportunities at the show."
According to industry members, Camisasca has been a consistent supporter of all the national bike advocacy groups and has created a variety of successful fundraising projects in support of groups like Bikes Belong, the League of American Bicyclists and IMBA. He also recently helped broker a new 10-year alliance between Nielsen Business Media and Bikes Belong that will substantially increase Interbike's investment in important advocacy programs such as Safe Routes to School and Bike Friendly Communities.
Independent from the retailer BRAINy awards, the Individual Advocacy award is based on industry nominations with the final decision being made by BRAIN and Bikes Belong staff members. Past honorees include Ariadne Scott of Specialized, Bill Fry of Bell Sports and Gary Sjoquist of QBP.
"I am proud to have been a part of increasing Interbike's monetary and in-kind advocacy efforts over the years, even when budgeting was tough," said Camisasca. "Looking back, I am grateful to various show owners who listened to and respected my advocacy efforts and team members like Mike Greeham, who patiently taught me 'Advocacy 101'."
While Camisasca is no longer the show director for Interbike, he is still very involved in the high-level strategy and management of the expo as an industry consultant. With the creation of his new event management, sales and marketing firm, Lifeboat Solutions, Camisasca also helps individual manufacturers identify and develop cost effective tradeshow strategies, and provides logistical support such as identifying vendor partners, service form submission, on-site coordination and post show follow-up.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Interbike Breakfast Presentation at the 2008 Bicycle Leadership Conference Provides New Research Results on Potential Host Cites for Interbike 2010
Conference attendees discuss the pros and cons of Anaheim, Denver, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas as possible event venues for future shows and as possible event venues for future shows
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. - January 24, 2008 - As a part of the eleventh annual Bicycle Leadership Conference (BLC), Interbike hosted a breakfast presentation on Saturday, January 19 at the Holiday on the Bay in San Diego, California. During the presentation, Interbike Industry Consultant Lance Camisasca reviewed Interbike's host city requirements, gave an update to the Sands Convention Center situation and shared new options for future event locations.
"This year's BLC was an ideal place to continue our discussions about potential host cities for the Interbike show," Camisasca said. "The audience included some of the bike industry's best leaders and for them to show up ready to go as they did at 7:30 a.m. was impressive."
During Interbike's breakfast presentation, Camisasca reviewed with BLC attendees key market criteria it considers when selecting a show venue. Interbike's top venue requirements include:
- Contiguous exhibit space of at least 700,000 gross square-feet and ample meeting room space,
- An event location where retailer and manufacturer attendance can be maximized,
- A large and diverse selection of hotels, restaurants and entertainment options conveniently located to the events,
- An international airport located within close proximity to the event with many flight options, numerous carriers and low airfare rates,
- Relaxed labor union regulations and high quality services,
- An OutDoor Demo site with great weather, extensive cross country/downhill trails and a closed road loop, and
- An event market that is recognized as a cycling culture destination.
Camisasca explained during the breakfast presentation that Interbike's long-term contract with the Sands Convention Center runs through the 2009 show, and Interbike is considering whether to renew the contract or move the show to another location.
Denver and Anaheim are two cities that come closest to meeting all the requirements to host Interbike. Both cities have the contiguous space needed, would provide a diverse selection of restaurants, hotels and entertainment options, are located in areas that would maximize attendance and are recognized as cycling culture destinations.
Comments during the question and answer portion of the presentation showed support for a move, but no clear consensus on either city.
"Denver is a much more bicycle-friendly city than Las Vegas, Salt Lake City or Anaheim, and the Outdoor Demo options near Denver are excellent," said Tim Blumenthal, executive director of the Bikes Belong Coalition. "From a Denver standpoint, however, I'm concerned about the hotels and transportation as Denver has not handled a show of Interbike's size before. So at this point I would say yes to Anaheim for the next three or four years, with a plan to move to Denver after that."
"I have to admit a personal bias that the Anaheim shows of previous years were not all that great," said Tim Jackson, brand manager for Masi Bikes. "But given the needs of the show and the industry, Anaheim is looking a lot better. With a newly remodeled and really gorgeous convention center and an eagerness from the city to lure the industry back, Anaheim is rapidly becoming a contender for me. When you add in the already existing infrastructure - they're harder to beat all the time."
According to Camisasca, Interbike has not made a decision about moving the show, but a decision will need to be made by mid-2008. As part of its ongoing research, Interbike will continue to reach out to retailers, industry advocacy groups and other industry members before making a decision about a the future venue for the Interbike show.
"I was quite happy with the attendees' understanding of the situation," Camisasca concluded. "The feedback I received regarding the potential host cities and the very engaging question and answer period following the presentation exceeded my expectations. We have now completed the first of several rounds of research in order to make the best decision possible."

Battistone will provide project management services to companies exhibiting at the 2008 Interbike OutDoor Demo and International Bicycle Expo
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – Jan. 6, 2008 – Lifeboat Solutions, an event management, sales/marketing consulting company for the recreation and sporting goods industry, today announced the hiring of Chad Battistone, a former Nielsen Business Media, Interbike and Health+Fitness Business account executive and bicycle industry veteran.
With more than 12 years of sales and marketing experience within the bicycle industry, Battistone will consult with North American and international bicycle and accessory manufacturers planning to exhibit at the September 2008 Interbike OutDoor Demo and International Bicycle Expo.
Along with Lifeboat Solutions founder and former Interbike show director, Lance Camisasca, Battistone will help individual manufacturers identify and develop cost effective tradeshow strategies, and provide logistical support such as identifying vendor partners, service form submission, on-site coordination and post show follow-up.
“I’ve worked with dozens of customer service professionals and account executives over the years, and Chad is one of the best I have ever worked with,” Camisasca said. “He intuitively knows what customers need and is a highly creative problem solver and efficiency expert. I could not have found a better individual to help with Lifeboat Solution’s event management services.”
Battistone’s experience includes
- Two years as a retail shop manager at one of JAX Bicycle Center’s California locations
- Seven years as a customer service manager with such companies as GT Bicycles, AMP Research, Nirve Sports, Ltd. and Felt Racing
- Three years with Interbike’s OutDoor Demo and International Bicycle Expo and the Health+Fitness Business Expo as an account executive.
“I’m excited to be working with Lance again helping clients with their event marketing,” Battistone said. “Over the next few weeks, Lance and I plan on reconnecting with manufacturers we’ve interacted with over the years and helping them with their trade show efforts.”
In addition to experience with North American exhibitors, Camisasca and Battistone have extensive experience with European, Chinese and Taiwanese exhibitors as well, allowing Lifeboat to provide event logistics to fit the unique needs of international exhibitors.
Lifeboat Solutions officially opened its doors this month and was founded by Camisasca, who (after spending 10 years with Nielsen Business Media as its group show director) decided to leave and build his own sales/marketing consulting company with Nielsen’s Interbike and Health+Fitness Business as his first clients.
During his tenure at Nielsen Business Media, Camisasca directed all sales, marketing and operational efforts for Interbike, the OutDoor Demo and Health+Fitness Business from 1998 to the end of 2007. Camisasca’s 30-plus years of sales and marketing experience also includes time spent working for companies in the sporting goods retail and manufacturing environments.

12/01/2007 - Bicycle Retailer & Industry News - JOHN CRENSHAW
Camisasca Starts Consulting FirmLAGUNA NIGUEL, CA — Lance Camisasca wanted to start his own business before he turned 50. He’ll beat that deadline by days, launching his consulting business, Lifeboat Solutions, on Jan. 1.
“I’ll turn 50 in January, so I’ll realize the dream just in time. I’m kind of pinching myself that I’m actually getting to that next level of my life,” said Camisasca, who’s logged 30 years in theindustry, the past 10 as Interbike director. Although he’s leaving Nielsen Business Media, Interbike’s owner, and won’t be show director any more, Interbike is his first client and he will remain deeply involved with it. In fact, he will be in the Interbike office every Tuesday for rounds of staff meetings, followed by big-picture strategizing with Joe Flynn, vice president of Nielsen’s Sports Group.
“My marching orders are to better the show, to make it a better return on investment for exhibitors and attendees alike,” he said.
One rumor he wants squashed is that his leaving Nielsen was anything but amicable. “I want to make it clear: This has nothing to do with me being discreetly fired. This was all about me wanting to do my own thing,” Camisasca said.
With a successful businessman brother as a model, he has desired his own business for years. “I want to take all my experiences that I’ve had over 30 years and make that available to companies and individuals—to start-up companies for instance—so they can conduct better business,” Camisasca said.
Potential clients could be U.S. or foreign boutique companies that need help with marketing, public and press relations, launching into retail or exhibiting at Interbike.
“Any of those tasks that are before new companies. I’d just love to tackle that,” he said. “At the other extreme, there may be large very successful companies, doing great business, who would just want to pick my brain about my experiences,” Camisasca added.
Those include several years in bicycle retail store management, followed by roles as a regional sales manager for SunTour USA and vice president of sales and marketing with Fuji America. As national sales
manager for Mavic USA, he designed and implemented Mavic’s distribution change to dealer-direct sales in 1992. He also managed 31 cycling and fitness trade shows.
Although he can’t release details yet, he hopes to launch a show of his own—it wouldn’t compete with Interbike— within the next year or so. As for Interbike, Camisasca wants to entice more non-endemic news media to the show; get a city-approved bike ride on the Strip, featuring utilitarian bikes; and create a special evening showcasing utilitarian bikes outdoors near the Sands to highlight cycling’s possibilities beyond recreation. As of Jan. 1, Camisasca can be reached at lance@lifeboatsolutions.com.

Interbike and Giant Leaders Join Bikes Belong Board
Boulder CO-Bikes Belong Coalition welcomed two new board members at its November 13 meeting in Boulder, Colorado. Lance Camisasca of Interbike and Elysa Walk of Giant Bicycle were elected to serve one-year terms, joining 17 other industry leaders who direct Bikes Belong's efforts to get more people riding bikes.
Lance Camisasca has been Interbike's group show director for the last decade. In 2008, he will shift into a key consulting role, guiding Interbike's sales and marketing strategies, and acting as the show's liaison for its advocacy and industry relations efforts.
Elysa Walk joined Giant in 2004 as head of Human Resources. She was named executive director in early 2006 and was promoted to general manager in October 2006. In this role, she directs day-to-day operations at Giant USA, overseeing administration, sales, marketing, and finance for the company.
Also at the meeting, the board of directors re-elected officers Kozo Shimano of Shimano American as president, Steve Meineke of Raleigh as vice president, and Chris Fortune of Saris Cycling Group as treasurer for one-year terms. All three have served in these roles for the past two years.
Bikes Belong is the U.S. industry group dedicated to putting more people on bicycles more often. This has been a landmark year for the nine-year-old coalition. In 2007, Bikes Belong awarded more than $500,000 in grants and bicycle organization support, developed a nationwide ad campaign, launched a new website, and formed a significant new partnership with Interbike. The related Bikes Belong Foundation awarded its first safety grants, hosted the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, and created a Bicycle Friendly Community grant program with support from REI.

Camisasca Will Be Interbike Consultant |
| |
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA (BRAIN)—Interbike is making changes to its upper management and sales department including current group show director Lance Camisasca working as an industry consultant to Interbike beginning the first of the year.
Camisasca will help Interbike develop sales and marketing strategies, identifying new market opportunities and acting as Interbike's key liaison for its advocacy and industry relations efforts.
Nielsen Business Media, Interbike's parent company, will not seek a replacement for Camisasca’s position.
As group show director, Camisasca directed all sales, marketing and operations efforts for Interbike, the OutDoor Demo and Health+Fitness Business since 1998. This past Interbike was Camisasca's 10th year at the helm. During his tenure as group show director, Camisasca oversaw 31 events, dating back to the Interbike Philadelphia regional event, the 1999 Open Air Trade Fair and two Winterbike's, to name a few.
As a marketing consultant for Lifeboat Solutions, a firm Camisasca will launch in January, Camisasca will use his 30-plus years of bicycle industry experience advising companies on sales, marketing and event management, with Interbike being his first client.
"There have been a lot of changes in the 10 years I've been with Interbike, both as a company and within the tradeshow industry," Camisasca said. "Interbike's parent company is now Nielsen Business Media, a fantastic organization with tons of experience in both the business-to-business arena and in the sports industries. Nielsen is also a company that really understands how to produce outstanding trade events, in part by having experts focus on what they do best, such as operations, sales, marketing, to name a few.
"The time for me to step outside of the bubble and work closely with Interbike as a client, Bikes Belong and the entire industry to further the importance of Interbike down the stretch couldn't be better. I leave in my wake exceptional sales, marketing and operation teams, who run efficiently, professionally and passionately in their day to day efforts. I am confident that my new role working with these strong individuals bodes well for Interbike and future events."
Camisasca will act as a key industry consultant, working directly with the Interbike sales and marketing teams and vice president of Nielsen's Sport's Group, Joe Flynn.
"Lance is an invaluable asset to Interbike," said Flynn. "His new role with Interbike will allow him to focus on the big picture, instead of day-to-day operations. Lance will now be able to assist me in formulating short and long term strategies for the cycling industry. In addition he will be working closely with industry groups such as the NBDA and Bikes Belong, making himself available to customers large and small, collecting feedback and providing effective ideas on improving the show."
"No one knows the show or the needs of the bike industry better than Lance," said Tim Blumenthal, executive director of Bikes Belong. "Lance's new role should allow him to focus on Interbike's big picture, relationships with key partners like Bikes Belong, and the process of making Interbike even more productive and more fun for everyone involved."
There are also some sales department changes.
Robert Roman, Interbike's senior account executive, has been assigned additional sales territories and will focus specifically on meeting the needs of the cycling industry with the Interbike Expo and OutDoor Demo moving forward. Previously, Roman was also an account executive for Interbike's sister show, the Health+Fitness Business Expo, the leading retail fitness industry business-to-business trade event.
Interbike's sales department is led by Andria Klinger with account executive, Brian McKavic and senior account executive, Robert Roman. Klinger and McKavic have been with Interbike for the last two shows and Roman for more than seven years.
